Day 9: Wed 5 Aug – Aschach to Grein

Ride: 101km

Nice weather but a long day due to the lack of accommodation along the way. A bit rough in one section due to roadworks. The only accommodation we could find was €98! 

The rather ordinary night continued – we went to a restaurant and I ordered PIG’S LIVER! Why? I don’t know. About two hours later I felt very sick and had the runs and vomits all night and the next morning. I can’t believe I had PIG’s LIVER – I hate pork and now I hate it even more. Graham was a big help – went to the pharmacy and got some non-prescription liquid.

Ride:  70km Woke up feeling a little better but not much. A very ordinary breakfast with smokers all around us, so we left quickly.  It was a hot day but we rode through some nice villages and vineyards. We stopped at an internet café/library and booked a room at Ibis in Vienna (our next stop) for two nights. Day 10: Thu 6 Aug – Grein to Melk

Ride: 50km It was 8:16am before I started to feel a little better. Needless to say, I had a very ordinary day on the bike. I was on the point of collapse most of the day.  When we got to our hotel, the bed was very welcoming! Graham brought up some soup and a milkshake which I consumed then read for about half an hour. Slept on and off for the rest of the afternoon and night. Our accommodation for the night - can't split that bed! Day 8: Tue 4 Aug – Passau to Aschach an der Donau (Austria)

Ride: 64km Rained off and on but only light rain. We were cycling along the river and through forests for most of the day. Had to catch a little ferry across the river at once stage.  Twin room for €56 and a nice dinner for €30 including a small carafe of wine each.
